From lst Dec. 1983 to 15th Dec. 1983, a survey was made of 200 teachers of elementary school, middle school, and high school in Kwang-ju, regarding their knowledge and attitude about the menopause and the following results were obtained.
1. General characteristics
39.5% of the total sample were in the 31~40 age group, 81.5% were married, 48.5% graduated from the university, 42.9% had more than three children, 39.0% weren¢¥t religion, 53.0% reported that they were belong to the middle class in their present health status, and 64.5% reported a gross family income more than 510,000 won.
Of 200 responts, 70.0 % (N =140) were premenopausal, 21.0 % (N = 42) were "in" the menopause, and 9.0%(N=18) were postmenopausal.
2. The degree of knowledge about the menopause of teachers categorized according to menopausal status.
The average number of correct responses to the 15-item true-false test of knowlecige for the sample as a whole was found to, be 8.6.
The menopausal group, with a mean of 8. 0, had the highest number of correct answers. The menopausal group consistently had a higher percentage of correct answers. The iten, with the fewest responses concerned the, period for a woman experience the chan-e of the life(question 5) which was accurately by only 31.5% of the sample.
The majority of the sample knew the salient aspects of the menopause : that women can no longer get pregnant (question 1), and that irregularities in menstruation signal the menop use(question ,12).
Only 39.0% of the total sample knew of the estrogen treatment for alleviation of menopausal symptoms.
3. Teachers¢¥ perception and attutide about the menopause.
The majority of the total sample felt they could talk freely with others about the menopause.
83.0% of the total sample felt they didn¢¥t know everything. they needed to know about the menopause.
The Majority of the total sample wanted to receive the help of physician and nurse about problems occurring during the menopause.
